    Bon apres midi as we say 😁 This is a question for the fantastic Fiona. It's an impossible question to answer properly but I have to ask it anyway. We had a visit from Mr fox yesterday and he took 2 of our girls. Jess and Nina. He has also injured another one, Isla . We have placed her on a soft cushion in the snug, it's the coolest room in the house. Outside she was not looking good in the heat. 30 degrees ! Her injuries, as far as we can tell, are some lacerations on her back. They don't look deep, more like rough scratches but there is blood. She is also limping whenever she tries to move around so it looks like some leg injury. We don't know how to ascertain if it , or any other bone, is broken. So, without seeing our chicken what advice can you give us in the way of first aid. She is alert and has had some cool water and has taken wheat and sunflower hearts from our hands, we have just cooked her some pasta which is cooling down as I type. We have just come back from visiting the UK and got the news from a neighbour who was looking after the birds, xvia WhatsApp this morning as we were getting off the ferry. I'm sorry we didn't pop in to see you but we were short on time. I understand you will be devastated by this news but try and keep a stiff upper lip. Hope your leg is improving news has been in short supply recently. So, back to the chicks, at what point do we take her to the vet ? Although finding a vet that does chickens round here is like looking for rocking horse doo doo. Thanks in advance (he says, chirpily).

    • @EnglishCountryLife
      @EnglishCountryLife 22 часа назад

      Hi Chris, Fiona is at her parents so you are stuck with Hugh. A vet can certainly X-ray & if you are concerned, start looking now. I would treat the lacerations with wound spray (this stuff) amzn.to/3KYEsR8 Keep her calm & cool and isolated from the flock. Hens will pick on a sick or injured bird and peck at their wounds. Inspect the leg & gently feel the bone. If no breaks or wounds it's likely sprained. Chickens don't do well with shock so she might not survive but if you keep her isolated & calm she has a fair chance. If she perks up & moves comfortably, night is the best time to put her back in with the flock but they might see her as an intruder so be watchful for attacks on her for 24 hours

      @@EnglishCountryLife Thanks Hugh. I've just come back from the chemist with some similar spray, the stuff you recommended will take 3 days to arrive but we need something right now. Just a quick bit of advice needed regarding sour crop, we have a 3 yr old White Sussex (head hen of 3 who has developed Sour crop, our first course of action was no food for 24 hrs only water with apple cider vinegar added. we have massaged her crop on 2 occasions whilst tilting her head downwards this made her regurgitate bring up smelly brown fluid about half a tea cup along with remains of seeds, pellets and the remains of a Slow worms tail. Started feeding her with yogurt with a little added honey this also had a sprinkle of pro biotic, conducted a second massage session later that day again more brown fluid and a few remains of seed, she is not interested in her normal food but drinking, comb still bright red with a slight purple edge. Today she has been force fed more yogurt, also tried a small amount of scrambled egg/chopped strawberry ignored egg but did eat strawberry which was coated in probiotic.She is self isolating and is going to bed indoors in a second nesting box. Imagine how better the world would be if there was no tv at all? …. Can’t have that though can they - no control over us then. 😏

    Thank you! I like your "doesn't have to be all or none" approach.

      Honestly Michael a lot of us can't afford a whole house system (although they are becoming more affordable), but we have enjoyed understanding the technology and it's capabilities & are expanding our set up. One day we will go "whole house"

    How png does the fermentiaion process take untill you can drink it?

    • @EnglishCountryLife
      @EnglishCountryLife 6 дней назад

      That depends very much on the temperature and yeast used but 4 weeks is usual until bottling. The wine benefits from aging in the bottle but can be drunk straight away

    great introductory video! but unfortunately there is no way that beer can taste very good if you’re using granulated sugar as your fermentables. Replace the table sugar with about 500g of dextrose (brewing sugar) and add 1kg of malt extract. Will end up with a much better finished product. Alternatively you could use just malt extract, about 1.2-1.5kg. If you use just sugar, you will be disappointed. also, to spice it up, I would recommend adding Saaz hops. Just literally throw the pellets into the bucket once fermentation is done. You may end up spending an extra £15 but you’ll get much better quality beer

      We will have to disagree here, I've had very nice beer indeed made with kits and sucrose. I've also had god awful beer made by all grain methods with digital temperature control, elaborate sparging and hand selected hops. The function of this video was to demonstrate that perfectly nice beer can be made simply and cheaply with widely available ingredients. Of course you can take it as far as you want. I know one brewmaster who wouldn't touch commercially grown barley or other peoples hops. However that's not how to make the hobby approachable to newcomers . If you think there's a better way, I look forward to your video series that demonstrates it & explains at a biochemical level the flavour impact of sugar digestion by yeast.
